Candidates told: Plastic posters not allowed in Quezon City
MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has reminded candidates to refrain from using plastic posters and other election paraphernalia.
“Plastic posters, even those that are torn into pieces, usually clog creeks and tributaries thereby increasing the risk of flooding,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said in a statement.
“We are calling on political aspirants to think about the long-term negative effects of plastics in our communities. We have to work together and consider our actions even on the tiniest detail to protect our environment,” she added.
In 2013, the city passed an ordinance prohibiting individuals and organizations from using tarpaulins and posters made of polyethylene or plastic within Quezon City.
As of yesterday, the city government has collected 18,000 kilos of campaign tarpaulins posted in unauthorized areas such as electric posts and public and government-owned facilities.
Aside from campaign-related posters, the policy also prohibits private organizations and companies from producing and posting plastic tarpaulins.
