MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections has ordered commercial firms in Zamboanga peninsula to stop printing sample ballots similar to the Comelec’s official ballots for the May 12 elections.

The Comelec-Zamboanga issued the order after receiving reports that some private companies are printing sample ballots that look exactly the same as the ones that will be used in the midterm elections.

“Sample ballots – which image, appearance, color and style – appear and mimic that of the official ballots is a violation of the Omnibus Election Code and other election laws,” the poll body said.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia directed all poll offices to ensure that private printing firms, including political candidates adhere with the laws covering sample ballots.

Garcia said criminal and administrative sanctions await violators.

The Comelec warned the public against the proliferation of unofficial T-shirts and other merchandise bearing the official theme and taglines of the elections, including the Comelec official seal.
