MANILA, Philippines — An estimated 532,000 devotees joined the procession of the revered image of Jesus Nazareno along roads surrounding Quiapo Church in Manila on Good Friday.

Fr. Ramon Jade Licuanan, Quiapo parish priest, said the over 400-year-old statue was brought out of the church at 11:15 p.m. on Maundy Thursday, or 45 minutes earlier than the midnight procession schedule.

Licuanan said the procession ended after 11 hours and 26 minutes or at 10:45 a.m. on Good Friday.

The church management said 1,152 devotees needed medical attention, with nine of them brought to hospitals managed by the Department of Health.

The devotees, mostly barefoot amid the extreme heat experienced in Manila, waited for the andas (carriage) to pass by portions of Quezon Boulevard, Recto Avenue and Carlos Palanca, a route shorter than the one used during the “traslacion” on Jan. 9.

Brig. Gen. Benigno Guzman, Manila Police District director, said the MPD deployed 3,000 policemen to secure the Good Friday procession.
