MANILA, Philippines — The Southern Police District (SPD) has recorded a 22-percent drop in crimes during the first quarter of the year.

Data comparing crime statistics from October to December 2024 and from January to March 2025 showed a 22-percent decrease in eight focus crimes, with cases dropping from 348 to 272.

The SPD credited the decrease in crime volume to strategic police interventions, increased visibility and community engagement.

Theft cases went down by 39 percent, from 141 to 86. Rape cases fell by 37 percent, from 65 to 41.

Incidents of physical injury dropped by 32 percent, from 47 to 32, and robbery cases by six percent, from 49 to 46.

“These results underscore the effectiveness of our operational adjustments and our strengthened partnership with the public,” SPD chief Brig. Gen. Manuel Abrugena said.

Meanwhile, homicide cases increased by 138 percent, from eight to 19. Murder cases climbed to 44 percent, from 18 to 26. Motor vehicle theft also increased by 33 percent, from six to eight cases.

Abrugena has ordered a recalibration of police operations, such as focused intelligence gathering, intensified patrols in identified hotspots and precision-targeted law enforcement actions to address these incidents.
