Manila seeks Yulo, Obiena help in ‘Palaro’

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government wants the help of Olympians Carlos Yulo and EJ Obiena in preparing for the Palarong Pambansa in April.
In a statement over the weekend, Mayor Honey Lacuna ordered the city’s sports council to lead the preparations for the contest.
“Our goal is to produce more Olympians and national athletes such as Caloy Yulo and EJ Obiena. Being proactive is better than just working hard. So we must start preparing now,” Lacuna said.
Yulo and Obiena, who competed in last year’s Paris Olympics, both reside in Manila.
The Manila Sports Council (MSC) will coordinate with city agencies, including the Manila Division of City Schools, Manila Health Department, the city’s social welfare department and the barangay bureau to ensure a comprehensive approach to the city’s involvement in the national sporting event.
The council will also collaborate with chambers of commerce and higher education institutions to bolster support for Manila’s athletes.
Lacuna also announced that the MSC would organize the first “Carlos Yulo Day” on Aug. 4.
Lacuna declared the Carlos Yulo Day in 2024 after the Filipino gymnast brought home two gold medals in the Olympics.
Recognizing the importance of private sector involvement in sports development, Lacuna expressed optimism about securing additional sponsorships for Manila athletes.
The 2025 Palarong Pambansa will be held in Laoag, Ilocos Norte from April 24 to May 1.
