Ex-rebel leader surrenders

BAGUIO CITY , Philippines — An alleged former New People’s Army (NPA) leader, whose group used to operate in the hinterlands of Cagayan, surrendered to authorities on Monday.
“Ka Loloy,” 55, told authorities that he was a logistics officer, and squad and team leader of more than 100 NPA guerrillas from August 1986 to the early 1990.
The Cagayan police said Loloy’s group operated in the hinterlands of Lasam, Lallo, Pamplona and Santa Ana.
Reports said Loloy abandoned the revolutionary movement in 1991 and hid for 30 years on Calayan Island.
The difficulty of living in the mountains and the possibility of getting killed and injured in battles with government forces reportedly prompted Loloy to abandon the communist group.
Loloy turned over a 12-gauge shotgun to authorities.
The Cagayan police committed to secure the surrenderee until he is reintegrated into the community.
