Franchise sought for traditional jeepneys

MANILA, Philippines — Transport group Piston or Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide has filed a petition seeking a five-year franchise to allow traditional jeepneys to operate.
Drivers who did not comply with the public utility vehicle modernization program (PUVMP) are not authorized to traverse roads, according to Piston president Mody Floranda.
The group filed the petition with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
The LTFRB recorded an 85.6-percent consolidation rate of PUVs nationwide in December last year.
Piston, however, said about 8,000 jeepney drivers and operators withdrew from the PUVMP.
Transport strikes have been held against the PUVMP, with drivers and operators protesting that they could not afford modern jeepneys.
