‘Rebel’ killed, soldier wounded in Batangas clash
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrilla was killed while a soldier was wounded in an encounter in Lobo, Batangas on Wednesday afternoon.
Rey delos Santos – who used the aliases Japeth, Roy and Ren – died at the scene of the encounter that occurred in Barangay Balibago.
Reports said the Army troopers were conducting routine security operations when they chanced upon a group of armed men in the area.
The firefight lasted 20 minutes before the guerrillas retreated, leaving behind their dead comrade, according to the military.
Troopers said they seized two high-powered firearms, improvised explosive devices and ammunition at the scene of the encounter.
A former NPA guerrilla said the death of Delos Santos was a major blow to the communist group operating in Batangas.
