BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has discovered new fault lines on Negros island.
The latest Phivolcs map shows the presence of the East Negros fault system that includes the San Carlos-Calatrava-Toboso faults in Negros Occidental and Bindoy-Guihulngan-Pamplona-Manjuyod faults in Negros Oriental, Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian, head of the Negros Occidental disaster management program division, said.
Caelian said the Pontevedra-Hinigaran as well as the Sibuland and Candoni fault lines are potentially active.
An earlier Phivolcs map shows only the central and southern Negros faults.
Caelian said fault lines or cracks in the surface of the earth are potential earthquake generators.
The Negros Occidental provincial government said it would review its contingency plans following the discovery of the fault lines.
