MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of the late “King of Philippine Movies” Fernando Poe Jr.’s 85th birthday, Brian Poe-Llamanzares led the first-ever FPJ Shoot for a Cause at Camp Aguinaldo firing range.

The invitational shooting competition gathered 165 participants coming from the different branches of the armed forces and security sector: Army, Scout Rangers, Navy, Marines, Airforce, Philippine National Police, Aviation Security Group, National Bureau of Investigation and Office of the Sergeant-at-arms (OSAA).

Among the participants were Hero Foundation head Major General Victor Bayani, Brigadier General Isagani Criste, OSAA General Roberto Ancan, Lieutenant Colonel Marc Yambing and Sen. Bato Dela Rosa.

Many private-sector organizations were also present to show their support, including the National Defense College Alumni Association of the Philippines, the Multi-sectoral Advisory Board of the Reserve Command, Philippine Army, the Aviation Security Group Advisory Board, the Philippine Airforce Gun Club, and many other civilian gun sport shooting clubs.

With eight major sponsors, including the Office of Sen. Grace Poe, Office of Senate President Chiz Escudero and other private sector donors, Llamanzares and the FPJ Panday Bayanihan volunteers were able to raise P100,000 which was donated to the Hero Foundation.

The foundation provides educational stipends to military orphans. The financial support helps keep orphans in school as it covers much-needed requirements such as school supplies, transportation, meals and a portion of their tuition fee.

“It fills my heart with joy to see all the shooters here today showing their support for the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. My grandfather, FPJ, would have been proud,” Llamanzares said.

He also explained why he chose Hero Foundation as the beneficiary for the competition. The advocacy resonated with his family, with his mother Sen. Grace Poe having been an orphan herself. He said that had it not been for the generosity of his grandparents, FPJ and Susan Roces, there may not have been a Sen. Grace Poe.

“Papa Ronnie and Mama Susan took my mother in and gave her a home, a future and a family. So it’s our turn to give back.”
