Korean dancer with a body to die for: Yunho Jeong

It is easy to confuse Jung Yunho and Yunho Jeong. Both Koreans, the former is the leader of the boy group TVXQ, a highly popular singer-songwriter, dancer and actor, while the latter is a regular performer in Okada’s World of Wonders.

Yunho stands out from the crowd since he is tall and ripped. His power, flexibility and dancing skills make him a crowd favorite. Many believe he has a striking resemblance to Diether Ocampo.

In a country with at least 100,000 Korean residents, Jeong blended easily with the local culture. He frequents the gym and even won a local fitness competition.

PHILIPPINE STAR: How did you get started in fitness?

YUNHO JEONG: I got surgery on my right leg when I was 20 years old so I had to start  rehabilitation exercises. I visited a rehabilitation center to learn how to do it. As I learned, I became interested in fitness. I never stopped working out since then.

Where does your motivation come from? What fuels your passion for both fitness and dancing?

My motivation comes from my inferiority. I always think I need to give more effort when I see someone better than me. My goal is very important in fueling my passion for fitness and dancing. When we are challenged, we sometimes become weak but commitment to our goal makes us strong enough to overcome any obstacles.

What work out routine works best for you?

The shoulder workout routine is best for me. I use my legs in the air while I’m dancing and shoulders are the base for that. I need very strong shoulders that’s why I do shoulder workouts two times a week.

You were set back by injuries during your dancing career; today, you are better than ever as a dancer and fitness enthusiast. How did fitness strengthen your body for dancing?

I’m using many muscles for dance technique. Like my strong triceps help me to stay longer when I do a handstand. Squats help me to jump higher and help me do some flips.

What is your diet like? How do you maintain your diet despite the constant traveling and the nightlife?

I always look for a nearby gym from where I stay. When I travel, I workout all the time no matter how long I stay. I can workout anywhere. There is no fixed diet but I’m trying to eat healthy food and I’m trying not to skip workout. I love nightlife and party but actually one beer is enough for me.

What do you love most about being a performer in Okada and how does fitness contribute to your role as a performer?

These days Korean drama is popular here that’s why Filipinos like me when I say I am Korean. This make me proud of my country and myself. A nice body gave me the confidence when I’m performing on stage. That is one of the reasons why I always workout.

How does your training and diet evolve as you get closer to a show or a photoshoot?

I always learn something from mistakes after a show or photoshoot. For example, if I feel that my chest is not enough after a photo shoot, I change my chest workout routine. Same with the show, if I make mistakes I try to figure out how to make my routine perfect. The struggles help me improve in life, fitness and dance.

Koreans are known for their trim physiques and their passion for fitness. There are over 90,000 Koreans in the Philippines. As a physically fit Korean performer, how do you inspire other Koreans to get fit?

I love promoting fitness to everyone. I convince them that there are so many benefits. You can work harder when you are fit because of your improved strength and stamina. You can eat better and more after a workout. Life is more enjoyable with a healthy body. Being fit gives you the confidence and determination to be whoever you dream to be.
