MANILA, Philippines — The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, May 13, but celebrities walking the red carpet will have to keep in mind the new dress code put in place.

The prestigious film festival released its Festival-Goer's Charter for this year's edition, where the dress code portion states nudity is prohibited on the red carpet and in every other area of the festival.

Additionally, voluminous outfits particularly "those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater" are also not permitted.

Artistic teams attending gala screenings at the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière are required to don evening wear like long dress or tuxedo.

Other options include cocktail dress, "little black dress," dark-colored pantsuit, dressy top with black pants, elegant shoes and sandals, and black or navy-blue suit with bow-tie or dark-colored tie.

Tote-bags, backpacks, and large bags are not allowed inside the theater. The festival's welcoming teams may prohibit access to the red carpet for those who did not follow the dress code.

Sheer dresses have been popular go-to selections by artists attending the Cannes Film Festival, like Bella Hadid last year in Saint Laurent, Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad the year before, and Kendall Jenner twice in 2018 (wearing Alexandre Vauthier and Schiaparelli).

It can be recalled that at the most recent Grammy Awards, Kanye West and then-wife Bianca Censori caused a stir on the red carpet when the latter took off her coat to reveal a transparent sheath dress.

The two were not even invited to the ceremony, instead holding an after party when all the awards had been given.

As for footwear, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence wore flip-flops under her red Christian Dior dress at the 2023 edition after exiting a screening of "Anatomy of a Fall." She explained that she just wanted to feel comfortable because her shoes were too big.

In 2015, a number of women were denied entry to a screening of "Carol" for wearing flat shoes, which was against the festival's high heels policy.

Some have even walked Cannes' Red Carpet barefoot like Julia Roberts in 2016 and Kristen Stewart two years later.

Twenty-two (22) films are vying for the Palme d'Or this year, while several others in the festival are screening out of competition or doing world premieres, including Filipino director Lav Diaz's "Magellan," starring Gael Garcia Bernal.
