NBI readies raps vs fake news peddlers against Bato

MANILA, Philippines — Branding the spread of fake news as a “pandemic” and its curtailment a non-partisan issue, National Bureau of Investigation Director Jaime Santiago said the NBI is now targeting administration supporters sowing disinformation against political foes.
“Cases will be filed against vloggers peddling fake news against Sen. Bato (dela Rosa),” Santiago told dzRH yesterday.
The move, he said, would show that “we mean business.”
“The next people who will be charged are those bashing the DDS (Duterte Diehard Supporters) camp, the loyalists,” he added. Santiago did not specify the charges the NBI intends to file.
So far, the NBI has sued no less than 10 individuals for spreading fake news, according to Santiago.
On Tuesday, four overseas Filipino workers were charged for splicing a video clip from Santiago’s appearance at a press forum in April to make it appear that he was intimidating OFWs.
In the dzRH interview, Santiago, a retired judge, expressed belief someone was funding vloggers to spread fake news. He did not give details.
“Fake news is too much; it’s like a pandemic,” the NBI chief stressed. “Some are making fun out of it without knowing they’re already crossing the line, while others are doing it as a livelihood.”
