SWS: Marcos Jr. not doing enough vs inflation

MANILA, Philippines — For most Filipinos, the Marcos administration is not doing enough to control the increase in prices of basic goods and services, a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

The Jan. 17 to 20 survey, commissioned by Stratbase Group, found that more than half of the respondents think that the solutions provided by the government to address inflation were insufficient.

Some 35 percent said the government’s solutions were “definitely insufficient,” while another 24 percent said it was “somewhat insufficient.”

Only 16 percent said it was sufficient, while 19 percent said it was neither sufficient nor insufficient. The remaining seven percent said they do not know enough about the issue to give an opinion.

Across areas, opinion on how the government deals with inflation is mainly negative.

Those who think that government solutions are insufficient were highest among those in Mindanao at 65 percent, followed by those in Metro Manila at 60 percent, rest of Luzon at 56 percent and Visayas at 54 percent.

The survey also asked respondents what they think are the food items that had the most significant price increase in the past three months.

More than half or 59 percent said rice, while 25 percent said meat (chicken, pork and beef). Eleven percent said it was vegetables, while four percent answered fish and seafood.
