MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has partnered with Walt Disney Co. Philippines in decorating 90 selected traffic signal lights in the metropolis.
MMDA chairman Danilo Lim said they decorated traffic lights in Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Manila, Muntinlupa, Parañaque and San Juan under the program dubbed “Mickey Lights Up Metro Manila.”
The project is part of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday celebration.
“This partnership will somehow provide a relief to motorists, especially during the Christmas season when traffic worsens,” Lim said.
Veronica Cabalinan, country head of Walt Disney, said the project aims to remind the Filipinos of the joy that Mickey has brought to them in the past nine decades.
“Mickey is an icon of fun, laughter and optimism and is one of the most enduring personalities of all ages. We feel privileged to be able to share a smile and spread happiness through Mickey, especially to the kids during this yuletide season,” Cabalinan said.
Although the project would not help address the traffic congestion in Metro Manila, Bong Nebrija, supervising operations officer of the MMDA, said it would encourage the younger generation to follow traffic rules.
Nebrija said simple traffic lights bring dull moments to motorists unlike the decorated ones.
