DFA report shows increasing demand for Filipino professionals in Canada

There is an increasing demand for Filipino professionals, caregivers and nurses in Canada.

Ambassador to Ottawa Jose Brillantes reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on the demand for Filipino health professionals during his meeting with Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean.

Brillantes said he was informed by Jean of the increasing demand for Filipino health workers when he presented his letter of credence to the Canadian head of state.

Jean told Brillantes of the demand, noting Filipinos were known for both their skills and proficiency in their vocations and the contributions they made to the growth and development of Canada.

There are about 400,000 Filipino workers and migrants in Canada.

Brillantes said he also updated the Governor General about developments in the Philippine economy like the strengthening of the peso and positive response of investors to efforts by the government in implementing fiscal reforms, continuing growth and political stability.

He told the Canadian leader of the expected revenue gains in the implementation of the expanded value-added tax and the expected upgrade in outlook for the Philippines’ credit ratings in the months ahead.

The Governor General expressed Canada’s eagerness to work with the Philippines in development cooperation, particularly in projects that improve public governance and business capabilities.

She also mentioned her keen interest in working with the Philippines on matters concerning human and drug trafficking and on issues affecting women.

The Philippines and Canada share unwavering interest in preserving maritime security, combating terrorism and transnational crimes, peacekeeping in failed and failing states and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Both countries cooperate actively to expand bilateral flow of trade, investment and tourism as well as promote educational and cultural exchanges.
