Star Magic rebrands workshops, looks for next big stars

The ABS-CBN’s Star Magic School for the Creative & Performing Arts (SMSCPA) is in pursuit of producing the next generation of stars, who will follow in the footsteps of Piolo Pascual, Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd Cruz, Sofronio Vasquez III, among others.
Formerly known as Star Magic Workshop, the recently rebranded SMSCPA offers different courses, including the Meisner Core Program for acting, the Popshop Workshop for singing and dancing, and the Voice Workshop to refine vocal skills.
The mentors include HB Benitez III, Star Magic SCPA kids acting coach; Alecx Lorica and Marcel David, Star Magic SCPA Meisner Acting for teens and adults coaches; Meann Espinosa, SCPA theater acting coach; direk Jon Moll, director of renowned ABS-CBN TV programs; Kirby Balagtas, executive director of You Me Us MNL; Dale Recina, creative producer of You Me Us MNL; Troi Bautista, producer and multimedia manager of You Me Us MNL; and award-winning actor John Arcilla for character building.
Voice mentors, Julie Anne Reyes and BGYO and BINI coaches Anna Graham and Jerwin Nicomedes, will also be part of SCPA, as well as the head choreographers of BINI and BGYO, coaches Mickey Perz, Reden Blanquera, Matthew Almodovar, Aennon Tabungar, and Josh Junio.

Head of ABS-CBN TV production direk Laurenti Dyogi and Star Magic and ABS-CBN business unit head Raymund Dizon were also present at the mediacon.
Talia Concio and BGYO showcased their singing and dancing talents at the event while former Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) housemates Kai Montinola and Jasmine Scales talked about their experiences with Star Magic Workshops and the impact on their artistic development.
Dizon shared that in Star Magic, they built the foundation to keep their talents relevant. “That’s the advantage of having subject matter experts in the school, because they have different point of views na nai-instill sa ating mga star dreamers to keep them relevant...”
He furthered that there are many talents in the country who are just waiting for their time to shine.
When he became the head of “Star Hunt,” they went around the Philippines searching for the next big start of ABS-CBN. He recalled, “Who would have known that Joshua Garcia started with ‘Pinoy Big Brother’? He auditioned in Marikina. Direk Lauren saw him. Ako nga to be honest, I said when I first saw Joshua, ‘Really?’ Anong nakita ni direk Lauren kay Joshua (laughs).
“But look at where Joshua is right now. Also Sofronio Vasquez III. Who would have known he would win ‘The Voice US’ Season 26?”
Vasquez joined Star Magic workshops for five consecutive classes, from basic to master class, Reyes beamed.
Dizon continued, “I would definitely tell you that there is a lot of talent na just waiting for the right moment to shine. Nandito naman po talaga kami as we’ve mentioned, it’s really a group effort. It involves the parents, the passion of the artists, kung gaano nila kagusto eh. Sometimes, attitude is really key. There are a lot that we will be presenting in the coming weeks, in the coming months that you’d be surprised (to find out).”
Benitez named Star Magic stars that he is most proud of and memorable to him. He told The STAR, “I might be accused of favoritism (laughs). We are really proud of those who came from the workshop and excelled in their field. Aside from Sofronio in the field of music, it would be Joshua Garcia, Arjo Atayde, Dimples Romana for acting, Alora Sasam for comedy.
“There are a lot of them who started in the workshop. The training was their foundation before they became famous.”
The onsite enrollment of the workshops has already opened and will continue on April 5 and 6, with limited slots available.
