MANILA, Philippines — Last year, Kuh Ledesma had a post-birthday presentation titled “KuhL Getaway Party” at the Hacienda Isabella and shared life experiences through songs.
This year, the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon topbilled “3:16 Songs and Stories” on her birthday, March 16, which was yesterday, at the Music Museum.
Actors Gina Alajar and Tirso Cruz III, her daughter, artist-singer-and-songwriter Isabella, and new singer Nathan Randal joined Kuh to talk about their personal journeys and showcase their talents.
Kuh, in an e-mail interview with The STAR, said that the show was a prelude to the Holy Week, “a time for deep contemplation on God’s sovereignty and His divine plan for each of us.”
Does she find time to reflect on life and the past year every time her birthday comes?
“As Christians, reflections are meant to be a daily practice. (Having) regular Bible readings and meditating on the Word (are) important to ensure we don’t lose sight of our faith. At the end of each day, it’s essential to pause and express gratitude to God for His blessings, including protection, provision, and the various events that unfolded throughout the day,” answered Kuh.
March, on the other hand, is also known as Women’s Month, and Kuh generously shared her take on women empowerment and gender equality.
“I strongly believe that women deserve equal opportunities in all aspects of life,” said she. “Providing them with equal opportunities not only boosts their self-worth, but also fosters a sense of self-respect and dignity. This is particularly important in our country, where women are known for their hard work and determination to pursue employment opportunities.”
“Many women are highly educated and skilled in their chosen fields, and it’s essential to recognize and support their talents and contributions. By offering equal opportunities, we empower women to thrive and contribute positively to society,” added the singer.
Along this line, Kuh also gave her two cents’ worth on women’s achievements in the entertainment and music fields and Pinay artists’ achievements in promoting and sustaining OPM.
“Women in the field of entertainment and music have made significant achievements, both globally and locally. They have broken barriers, changed stereotypes, and inspired countless individuals through their talent, creativity, passion, and dedication,” said she.
“Filipina artists are not only influential in promoting OPM but are also actively involved in the welfare of Filipino artists,” continued she, acknowledging the contributions made by fellow empowered and talented women.
“For example, individuals like Mitch Valdes, one of the founders of the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), worked tirelessly to support and uplift fellow artists in the industry,” said Kuh. “Also, many Filipinas have crossed borders and made their mark on the international scene. Filipina singers like Lea Salonga (have) achieved global recognition and have also paved the way for other Filipino talents to showcase their skills on prestigious musicals worldwide. Even the half-Filipinas contribute significantly to the arts, showing the universal appeal and impact of Filipino talent.”
As a Pinay singer, Kuh Ledesma got the chance to make OPM known on the global stage. She served as a judge at the 1991 Miss Universe and mounted concerts worldwide.
“I’ve proudly carried the Philippine flag, promoting Filipino culture and music to international audiences,” said she.
“Overall, the achievements of the Filipina artists not only prove their exceptional talent, but also their commitment to preserving and promoting OPM for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.”
Does Kuh have a particular song or a collection of tunes she listens to on her birthday?
“I consistently listen to praise and worship songs, not just on my birthday, but every day, regardless of the occasion. These songs hold a special place in my heart as they uplift my spirit, strengthen my faith, and provide a sense of peace and comfort,” answered she.
“They serve as a reminder of God’s presence in my life and His unwavering love and grace. Listening and singing these songs gives me a deeper connection with my faith and comfort in times of challenges,” concluded she.
