SWU belles clobber USC in Compostela volleyball tourney

CEBU, Philippines – The Southwestern University (SWU) belles pummeled the University of San Carlos (USC) in straight sets in the 2nd Mayor Ritchie Wagas Volleyball Cup at the D.M. Reynes Gymnasium in Compostela, Cebu.

The Joerem Yu-mentored SWU opened the match with a 25-20 win and then finished off the Carolinians in convincing fashion, 25-15.

“My team is getting better now because of the rigid practice that they went through. This tournament would be a good training for the girls as they will be facing tough competitors in the upcoming CESAFI season,” said Yu.

Among those who figured prominently in SWU’s triumph were Elizabeth Emnace, Lorie May Layno, Danika Gendrauli, Raphril Aguilar, Shara Bulac, Luilyn Paciño, Danalie Baquiro, Rhea Loayon, and newcomers Crystali Picos and Anna Bennova Sabanal.

In the other game, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) squad stunn ed the defending CESAFI women’s champion University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22.

Team Catmon and USPF secondary volleybelles, on the other hand, won by default over Liloan and Queenstown, respectively.

The rest of the competing teams include the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), USJ-R Alumni and Team Housing.

Aside from medals and trophies, the champion will receive P15, 000, while the second and third placers will take home P10, 000 and P5, 000.

The tournament is among the highlights of the annual fiesta celebration of Compostela on July 24-25 in honor of its beloved patron Señor Santiago de Apostol. — Marigold P. Lebumfacil (THE FREEMAN)
