The tandem of architects Mark Capili and Vincent Sesbreño triumphed over the Cebu Sports Media Association (CSMA) duo of Manny Villaruel and Erwin Lirazan in straight sets to clinch the men’s doubles Class E title of the highly-successful 3rd United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Badminton Cup yesterday at the Racquet Zone of Montebello Villa Hotel.
Capili and Sesbreño outsmarted Villaruel of The Freeman and Lirazan of Superbalita in the first set, 21-17, and then kept its momentum with finesse to finish off the gritty media side in the second set, 21-18.
Capili and Sesbreño pocketed the P3,000 champion’s purse undefeated in three games. They bested Rommel Manlosa of Sun.Star and Jun Migallen of Superbalita in their first game, 31-27, and then escaped with a thrilling 33-31 win over fellow architects Peter Bordador and Criz Matunog.
Villaruel and Lirazan, on the other hand, stormed into the final round after eking out a 32-30 victory over Bordador and Matunog and cruising past Manlosa and Migallen, 31-23.
Villaruel and Lirazan took home P2,000, while Manlosa and Migallen reasserted their supremacy over Bordador and Matunog, 31-12, to grab the P1,000 third prize.
On hand to award the cash prizes and the beautifully crafted trophies were the event organizers led by Alan G. Choachuy, Lawrence Young, Christopher Dy, and Richard Abella - all of UAP Lapu-Lapu Chapter.
