Because of the tight water situation in Metropolitan Cebu, water consumers are urged to help conserve water.
On Monday, the Metropolitan Cebu Water District will launch a signature campaign calling on its consumers to do their share in conserving water. The campaign is in line with the celebration of the World Water Day, which has been observed yesterday.
The United Nations has declared March 22 every year as World Water Day.
In Cebu, MCWD will once again conduct a signature campaign for the “World Water Day Manifesto” from March 24 to March 28 because March 22 falls on Black Saturday.
The signing of the manifesto will be held at the Customers’ Paying Area at the ground floor of the MCWD main building.
“Everyone is encouraged to affix his/her signature and join the celebration,” the water district management said.
The manifesto contains the Cebuanos’ pledge to join hands in addressing the problem on lack of water in Metro Cebu by strictly conserving water, report water leaks, pilferage, wastage, and other water losses to MCWD.
Likewise, consumers are urged to support the Cebu City’s environmental campaign by using recycled and biodegradable materials, grow more trees, report illegal logging activities, and avoid the use of chemicals that might threaten the potability or quality of water.
“MCWD has been participating in this worldwide celebration and intensified its campaign for the public to value water and its conservation,” MCWD said in a statement. “Water has become such a precious limited commodity that it is important for all of us to help in its sourcing, preserving, recycling and conserving.”
In 1992, the UN General Assembly has declared March 22 of each year as the World Day for Water.
The World Water Day theme from the years 2005 to 2015 is “Water is Life.” However, the local theme for this year is “Ang Tubig ay Yaman ng Buhay.”
