Campaigners violate traffic laws

We have received many complaints from readers about the campaign supporters and candidates, who don’t seem to care about the traffic congestion that they are causing.

One reader sent this text message, “Wa pa gain modaug ning uban hilas na, unsa na lang kung ma elect. Naay kandidato diri sa Talisay nga iyang mga tigpapilit ug poster pataka lag parking.”

Another complained about a truck that had banners of a presidential candidate that caused traffic congestion at Gov. Cuenco Ave. last Sunday.

She said that the runningmate of the candidate is known for imposing peace and order, but the driver of their campaign truck does not care.

She said that the candidates and their supporters must be careful about their actions because they can lose votes from such acts.

We have also observed many campaign vehicles that are parked on NO STOPPING areas while the people are attaching posters on the walls.

These people probably don’t realize that they are not only violating traffic laws, but also elections laws.

There are also campaign materials that are placed over traffic signs, which we hope would be removed by well-meaning citizens since the authorities are useless.

There is that belief that law and order sometimes suffer during elections because the officials want to please many people.

This is probably the reason why our constant complaining about tents put up for wakes have never been addressed.

There is now a text at Imus Ave., which occupies more than one lane of the road.

The tent bears the name of a top city official, which is not even running in that district.

Many motorists have complained to us that the people using the tent are gambling in broad daylight, but nobody’s stopping them.

This is a portion of an email from a reader, who asked not to be named:

I understand that the Filipino culture includes our respect for the dead, but gambling while the wake is ongoing is a form of disrespect. I don’t want to appear like I am elitist, but I believe that wakes should not be allowed to extend outside of the chapels or the homes into the streets. Please keep on writing about this issue.

We hope that even if this is the election season, our leaders would realize that putting things in their proper order is very important for our city to grow.
