Retired dental surgeon shifts to vinegar venture

Filipinos love to use dips when they eat. Usually, we have vinegar or maybe a dash of soy sauce with our meals to liven up the taste of the food we eat.

The love for food and his penchant for the best-tasting vinegar led a retired dental surgeon to develop his own brand of vinegar.

Raymundo 'Mon' de Guzman did several experiments at their home to find the best formula for his 'suka' using coconut wine locally known as 'tuba.'.

After several weeks of experimentation and his mother's approval, de Guzman found the perfect formula for his own brand of vinegar called 'Kuraching.'

"My mother tasted the preparation and from thereon all our meals had Kuraching on the side," de Guzman said.

He learned how to make vinegar from his friends back in the 1970s, but he never thought that one day he would do it as a business.

Currently, he produces about 6,000 bottles of Kuraching a month in their residence in Banilad, but is already looking at a lot owned by their family in Liloan as a prospective site for a factory later this year.

De Guzman still does everything for Kuraching Vinegar Industry but he is now hooking up with suppliers and some people, who would help him grow the business.

His vinegar has been tested by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

De Guzman is optimistic at the future of his business with many orders coming from friends and acquaintances living outside Cebu to test his vinegar and market it in their areas.

He's also looking at selling through the supermarkets later this year.

De Guzman, who was forced to retire from the dental profession back in 1994 due to paralysis, has turned his passion for cooking into a business.

Someday, he is also looking at exporting the vinegar, but he's taking it one step at a time for now.
