Shell’s Goal Zero project commits to accident-free workplace

MANILA, Philippines - Better safe than sorry, so goes the old adage. Indeed, safety can never be overemphasized. Royal Dutch Shell, the global energy giant, knows this well.

Thus, it developed the so-called Goal Zero Heroes campaign to reward people who make a real difference in making Goal Zero possible and to celebrate simple acts with high impact.

Last September, Shell awarded Paul Sharratt, coating inspector for Malampaya Phase 3 project.

Sharratt, who received the Goal Zero Hero Award last Sept. 12 at the Keppel Subic Shipyard, bested 10 nominees from across the Asia-Pacific region for his outstanding frontline leadership.

In the awarding ceremony, Shell vice president for projects Graham Henley and fabrication yard site representative Nathan Stephenson presented the award.

During the presentation, they said that Sharratt was recognized as a safety leader for showing consistent diligence in intervening to avoid potential safety hazards.

“He helped shape a better environment at the MP3 fabrication yard by diligently offering advice and guidance on handling materials on potentially explosive atmospheres due to paint vapor. He also guided contractors on proper handling and rigging of plates prior to painting and supervised blasting operations to ensure everyone complies with Shell’s high safety standards,” Shell said.

Furthermore, Shell said Sharratt’s feat proves that the MP3 team puts a high value on people and the environment by upholding safety as a license to operate.

Sharratt is assigned to the MP3 project, which is the third phase of the Malampaya deep water gas-to-power project, which supplies 40 percent to 45 percent of Luzon’s power requirements.

As a safety leader, Sharratt diligently offered advice and guidance on handling materials on potentially explosive atmospheres due to paint vapor. He also guided contractors on proper handling and rigging of plates prior to painting and supervised blasting operations to ensure everyone complies with Shell’s high safety standards.

The award, Shell said, highlights the operational safety milestones of the third phase of the Malampaya project, a testament to how the company successfully embedded a safety culture among its people that ensures that everyone gets home safely to their families.

The Goal Zero project of Shell is the company’s commitment to an accident-free workplace.

“It is our license to operate,” said Shell.

â€œMuch like the Shell Golden Rules of Honesty, Integrity and Respect for People, Safety is also held as a deeply-held value, which upholds our commitment to protecting Health, Safety, Security and Environment most especially among communities where we operate,” Shell said.

Intervening can be as simple as pointing out if water has spilled on the floor, making it slippery and people should be warned not to pass by the area, it added.
