MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power Corp., through Therma Marine Inc. (TMI), has broken ground on its 48-megawatt (MW) hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.

Targeted to come online in the second quarter of 2026, the Nasipit Hybrid BESS will be integrated into the company’s oil-fired power facility, TMI Mobile 2.

The project’s financial details were not immediately made available.

Ronaldo Ramos, AboitizPower Transition Business Group chief operating officer for operated assets, said the project is expected to reinforce the grid and support the wider adoption of renewable power.

“It’s a smart solution for a smarter energy landscape,” he said.

The construction of the Nasipit project follows the 2022 commercial operations of the 49-MW hybrid BESS installed in the TMI Mobile 1 oil-fired facility in Maco, Davao de Oro.

AboitizPower said its oil-fired power plants, along with the BESS technology, would provide “fast, responsive power” to ensure the stability and reliability of the national grid.

A BESS technology stores electricity from power plants or the power grid for various applications such as grid stability, energy efficiency, and renewable energy (RE) integration.

“In step with the country’s ambitions for its energy mix, AboitizPower aims to grow its portfolio of generation assets with renewables and selected baseload builds,” the company said.

Under the Philippine Energy Plan, the government wants to achieve a balanced energy mix, with renewables accounting for 50 percent of the country’s power generation by 2040.
